pTake a second to think about when you got your first cell phone. What about an e-mail address? These everyday entities seem so normal in our lives, but try and think back ten or even twenty years when these necessities were brand new, exotic and, at times, unaffordable. Now think about our pets. Ten years ago our dogs were as simple as apple pie. Nothing has changed with dogs, but our pampering has gone digital. Let us take a moment to briefly go over some of the digital advancements made in the pet world, advancements that ten years ago we could have never imagined./p

pstrongOn The Radar/strong strong: Pet Microchips amp; Pet GPS/strong/p

pMicrochips may sound like a futuristic concept, but they have become more and more popular and, in some cases, are required in pets. And though they may sound like a painful process they require no antiseptic, feel like any standard vaccination and the microchip itself is no bigger than a grain of rice. Once a pet is tagged, if they are lost and found elsewhere, once scanned, your pet immediately comes up in a national database no matter how far (or long) they have traveled. Pet alerts are sent out which ultimately saves costs at shelters, shelters that need all the space it can get for needy and abandoned animals. If you#039;re curious about microchipping your pet, consult your veterinarian for more information./p

pIf you#039;re worried about chipping or would like to proactively protect your pets, there are emchipless/em strongGPS/strong alternatives./p

pSpotLight GPS Pet Locator ($199.99) has introduced its own chip-free Pet GPS, giving pet parents the ultimate peace of mind if they fear Fido may slip away. SpotLight GPS Pet Locator boasts best in show because they are the only GPS locator teamed with American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR). And with a Pet GPS like SpotLight, you can track your pet through virtually any device including standard cell phones, iPhones, Blackberries and computers. The device is water resistant so if your pet knows how to get wet, you can still feel safe. After all, SpotLight team#039;s mission is one single goal: no missing pet will ever go unfound./p

pstrongAnimal Surveillance: Pet Cams/strong/p

pSome people use tiny remote video cameras to monitor their nanny or million dollar mansion, but what about viewing a pet? It appears that in this digital age, a new trend in pet monitoring is blossoming and pet parents are quickly taking advantage of it, comfortable knowing they can check up on their pet when they#039;re away./p

pThe strongspan style=text-decoration: underline;Vue personal video network/span/strong ($299.99) is the easiest way to remotely view your pets from any PC or iPhone. The system consists of a network of small battery-powered wireless cameras that can be placed anywhere, and with no software to download installation is easy. The cameras stream real-time video directly to the Internet, viewable on all major browsers and while on-the-go with an iPhone./p

pstrongPetography: Pet Photos in the 21/strongstrongst/strongstrong Century/strong/p

pPet portraits are favorites among loving pet parents. Whether you keep them in your wallet, on your fridge or on a social networking site, you want your pet to look good. Red-eye has plagued pet (and human) photos for decades, but new technologies are allowing pet parents to crank out beautiful pet portraits./p

pThe strongSonyCyber-shot DSC-TX7/strong ($399.00) was designed with your pet in mind. The camera is so advanced that it can retouch that pesky red-eye instantly. And with features like a touch-screen, facial recognition, and anti-blink technology the camera is guaranteed to document your pet in their true light. Planning a photo shoot? The Cyber-shot even allows you to set your camera scene to Pet mode, proving it truly is the pet parent#039;s dream camera./p

pstrongRobo-Pet: Pet Robotics/strong/p

pAny pet parent will tell you that they love their animal, sometimes they just hate the clean up. But in this century, pet parents have become aware they robots may just allow them more time to spend, and less time worrying about clean-up./p

piRobot has introduced the strongRoomba 562 Pet Series robot vacuum ($369.99)/strong, specifically designed to tackle pet hair, pet food and any other mess your pet may have caused. This home-cleaning robot can tackle four rooms at once while you play fetch or hit the dog park. The robot is extremely durable and rather smart too. Watch how it will effortlessly travel from room to room. You can even program it to clean at any time, so you don#039;t have to worry about cleaning or pet messes!/p

pstrongPeternet: The Internet of Pets/strong/p

pIn addition to pet-tracking technology, the internet has revolutionized the pet world (and our pets don#039;t even go online)! It#039;s a common misconception that you cannot adopt a specific breed of dog you might be looking for, so you have to find a breeder and purchase them for an outrageous price. The truth is that any dog breed (purebred, cross-bred or mutt) can be found online, up for adoption. It just takes a little searching. PetFinder is the leading adoption rescue site for locating needy dogs from all over the country. Boasting 13 million adoptions since 1995, strongPetFinder/strong is a one-click site for adopting anything from a French Bulldog to a Great Dane. Just search by location and your new best friend could be only a few miles away and in need of a good home!/p

pNow owners can stream also steam their pets live, a phenomenon, which has become popular on cam sharing sites such as strongUSTREAM/strong. Much like the emTruman Show/em, people love watching puppies grow up. In 2008 a San Francisco couple streamed their Shiba Inu, Kika, litter live, garnering over 20 million views (the biggest hit for USTEAM). Now the Shiba Inu has a new litter guaranteed to get even more views./p

pYou may wonder what the micro-blogging site strongTwitter/strong has to do with pets, but Twitter has found to be useful in helping lost dogs get found. In addition to a number of Twitter accounts dedicated to live-Tweeting of lost dogs and cats, celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Jesse James have taken to their accounts to spread the word on their missing pooches. Due to the capacity of the Twitter market, pet#039;s like James#039; Pit Bull Cinnabun have been found./p

pNow that we have reached a new decade, should we expect technology to continue zipping through time, or will we witness a slowdown? Either way our pets have been included in this modern, modern world./p

Cepia#039;s Zhu Zhu Pets, the whimsical motorized hamsters that conquered during last year#039;s holiday shopping season, are coming back strong in 2010. Really, really strong: Meet Kung Zhu Battle Hamsters, the militant hamster arm of Zhu Zhu, replete with elements that appeal especially to boys, according to Russ Hornsby, CEO of Cepia.br /br /The new line will feature Special Forces, Ninja Warriors, Rangers, and the Skull Tribe Battle Hamsters, along with attendant battle gear, vehicles, and training arenas. br /br /Training? According to the company: br /br /blockquotePrior to their training, you might mistake the Kung Zhu squad for a traditional Zhu Zhu Pet. They dart around, scurry from place to place, and coo and squeak based on the unique environment they encounter. But all that changes when the hamsters encounter the magical Tablet of Zhu, a special training ground that transforms the Zhu Zhu Pets into Kung Zhu Special Forces or Ninja Warriors, ready to do battle against each other.br //blockquote

pSpink, who has a history of training and breeding dogs and horses, appeared in U.S. District Court in Seattle on Friday and was ordered detained pending another hearing, set for April 30. He calls his operation Exitpoint Stallions Limitee and expounds at length on its Web site about his philosophy./p

pAre we unconventional in our approach to stallion care? Absolutely, he writes./p

pHe later adds: We don#039;t wall off sexual energy in our stallions as something dangerous or inappropriate, but rather channel that energy towards positive, safe, appropriate paths. There#039;s a proper time and place for it, and we work towards those sorts of skills rather than fighting un-winnable fights against deeply-rooted instincts./p

pSpink, 39, made a fortune in Oregon buying and selling small companies in the 1990s and was known as an adrenaline junkie, listing rockclimbing and base-jumping off cliffs, radio towers and bridges among his hobbies./p

pBut by 2002 his wealth had evaporated. He filed for bankruptcy as creditors sought millions from him, and he began running cocaine and marijuana across the border for a local drug kingpin./p

pSpink was arrested in 2005 after investigators pulled him over with a load of nearly 375 pounds of cocaine, valued at $34 million. He was given a lenient, three-year sentence because of his extensive cooperation with investigators./p

pSince then, he has been on a five-year term of supervised release, during which time he must abide by all state, local and federal laws./p

pUnder Washington law, it#039;s illegal to assist others in engaging in bestiality — and breaking any state law would be a violation of Spink#039;s release, punishable by up to five years in prison./p

pAuthorities searched his farm Wednesday after prosecutors received a tip from a public defender#039;s office in Tennessee. The office reported that Spink had been calling them incessantly about a jailed defendant in a bestiality case in Tennessee./p

pThat man, James Michael Tait, had previously admitted filming a man having sex with a horse in Enumclaw, Wash., in 2005. The man Tait filmed died of internal injuries suffered during the incident. He received a minor sentence in the case because Washington had relatively weak bestiality laws at the time./p

pIt#039;s not immediately clear why Spink was calling Tennessee about the Tait case./p

pWhen agents searched Spink#039;s home, they found a video of a man sexually abusing dogs — and that man, Clarke, was still on the property, wearing the same clothes as in the video, Elfo said. He was charged with animal cruelty and made an initial appearance in Whatcom County Superior Court on Thursday./p

pClarke was given a court-appointed defense lawyer for that appearance only and otherwise does not yet have an attorney./p

pRoe said Friday that Clarke had admitted his involvement to investigators./p

I haven#8217;t had to do this with a pet but I#8217;ve been through this with 3 people and the pain of ongoing treatment that just extends the pain for all doesn#8217;t seem to be all that humane.br /
Both my grandfather and sister died of cancer. Grandfather 36 yrs ago and once diagnosed he only lasted for 2 weeks. My sister fought for 6 years, 2 remissions, but in the end she decided against fighting any longer. It hurt losing my best friend and sister but it was the best thing for her. My dad had Alzheimers and suffered for 10 yrs. In the end I had to decide to put him in hospice or extend his life for what would have been a relatively short time. I felt then and have not changed my mind in the least that hospice was the most humane thing I could do for him. Of course this is not the best decision in every case but I think the quality of life is as an important determination as the length of life. Please remember that in all of these situations life would have only been lengthened a couple of weeks to maybe 2 months. And they would have been the most pain filled times of their lives.br /
Please take this only as my experiences, in these specific instances, not as a cautionary tale. And that I would be devastated if it was my dog we are discussing.br /
Best of luck to you.

Picking Dog Food Supplements

pOne of my favorite things about Philadelphia, aside from the acclaimed restaurants and traditional favorites, are all of the neighborhoods overflowing with undiscovered food gems. Far-off corners of the city with things like the Pizzazz, a pizza with American cheese and yellow peppers unknown to most people outside of the area./p

pSo, flipping through the phone book, I was excited to find a listing for strongNicky And Pete#039;s Famous Hot Dogs on 64th Street,/strong in a tiny, dwindling Italian neighborhood consisting of about four blocks in the middle of West Philadelphia, an area more known for Caribbean and soul food. How famous could it be? Was it even still there? /p

pThe other day I ventured up there, expecting a 75-year old lunch counter with a few old timers drinking 50-cent coffee and talking about plumbing, eating sad burgers and cheap hot dogs with greasy chili. But what I found was a strongbrand-spanking-new hot dog stand, doing more than 13 different hot dog styles./strong/p

p/p

pNicky Pete#039;s is down the street from an Italian social club and next-door to an old-school cafe, complete with guys out front smoking cigars, drinking espresso and speaking in a Sicilian dialect, who seem to make up a good part of Nicky Pete#039;s business. strongThey do the whole nine yards as far as Philly sandwiches gomdash;hoagies, cheesesteaks, breaded chicken cutlet with longhots and sharp provolone, homemade meatballs./strong Sides of pepper shooters (cherry peppers stuffed with prosciutto-wrapped sharp provolone), crab fries, and wings./p

pspan class=pullquoteBut what really knocked me out is the serious hot dog menu./span strongThey#039;re cooking them up Philly-style/strong with Dietz Watson dogs split and grilled, served on club rolls (the short, double-wide size is perfect for a split hot dog). /p

p/p

p class=captionNicky and Pete#039;s Special: Cheez Whiz, onions, and special sauce./p

pstrongThey have the classic Philly pepper hash/strong and even the famous Philly surf and turf fish cake and hot dog combo. strongThen there#039;s the signature Nicky Pete special/strong with Cheez Whiz, onions, and special sauce that tasted like a cross between red onion sauce and mild chili (they also have a thicker standard chili)./p

pThey also have a strongChicago Dog, Baltimore Dog/strong with slaw and bacon, and even a strongJersey Dog/strong with peppers, onions, and potatoes. Not deep-fried, or on pizza breadmdash;heresy to the North Jersey Italian hot dog purists, I#039;m suremdash;but it was damn good, and pretty rare on Philadelphia hot dog menus./p

pAlso on the menu is a strongNew York Dog/strong with kraut and mustard, strongSouth Beach/strong with American cheese and tomatoes (the Pizzazz Dog?), strongPete#039;s Dog/strong with pickles, and strongThe Godfather,/strong piled with pretty much every topping in the house. I#039;m sure if you requested, they could even whip you up a South Philly Dog (they have all the ingredients) but Nicky Pete#039;s dogs beat anything coming from Citizens Bank Park by leaps and bounds. /p

p/p

p class=captionJersey Dog: peppers, onions and potato./p

pstrongNicky Pete#039;s is pretty much a take-out only joint,/strong although there is a steak shop-style stainless steel ledge with a few stools if you want to eat in. Everything is cooked to order with some serious care, and I#039;m betting the steaks and homemade meatball sandwiches are worth making another trip for. The prices are ridiculously lowmdash;strongthe dogs are all $2.10,/strong except for the Godfather ($2.70) and the combo ($3). The rest of the sandwiches all hover around $5, and a cheesesteak is only $3.75./p

pThere#039;s some other good stuff in the neighborhood (known as Overbrook) including the original location of strongJim#039;s Steaks/strong and a pizza place that might be worth checking out, but I don#039;t think I#039;ll be able to go all the way up there without grabbing a few hot dogs to-go./p

pThey#039;ve been in business for only eight months. The only downside? That it isn#039;t closer to Center City. I#039;m not going to say it#039;s emofficially/em my new favorite place in Philly, but the next time someone asks me where to go for hot dogs here, I#039;m sending them on a trip to 64th street./p

h3Hot Dog Of The Week: South Philly Dog/h3

p class=bylinePosted by Hawk Krall, April 9, 2010 at 1:30 PM/p

p/p

pWith the start of baseball season, millions of fans are preparing to devour ridiculous amounts of hot dogs across the country. Many stadiums have signature hot dogs related to the regional tastes of their city, or even the stadium itself. Philadelphia is known as a cheesesteak and roast pork town, but Phillies games have always been one of the best places in the city to eat a hot dogmdash;especially with Dollar Dog Night and the Philly Phanatic#039;s air powered hot dog launcher./p

pFor the 2010 season, Citizens Bank Park is getting into the signature hot dog game for the first time, and recently put three different Philly hot dogs up for a vote./p

pFirst up: the strongOlde Philadelphia Dog/strong with Amish Pepper Hash, mustard, and a pickle on a poppy seed roll. Definitely my pick for our signature dog, with more than just a nod to Philadelphia#039;s unique old-school pepper hash hot dogs, still available at Lenny#039;s in the northeast and the Hot Dog Truck at 24th and Passyunk./p

p/p

p class=caption[Photographs: Kris Chau]/p

pNext up is thestrong Citizens Bank Park Summer Dog/strong, with fresh cucumbers, pickled onions, and ancho chile mayo on a pretzel roll; sort of a cross between a soft pretzel, chicago dog, and banh mi./p

pLast is the strongSouth Philly Dog/strong, with broccoli rabe, roasted long hot peppers and shaved sharp provolone on seeded Italian breadmdash;basically a roast pork italian with the pork switched out for a weiner. /p

pAll of the variations up for vote are all-beef skinless Hatfield franks, split down the middle and grilled in a good amount of oil, almost approaching deep-fried territory. The split-and-grilled style is fairly common in older Philadelphia and Pennsylvania hot dog joints, and a good way to get some flavor and texture into an otherwise very mild frank./p

pNot a huge surprise, the strongSouth Philly Dog was the clear favorite/strong, with 46 percent of the vote. The Summer Dog was probably too close to a Chicago Dog for most Philadelphians, and the only people that seem to care about or even remember hot dogs with pepper hash are people who were alive during the Depression (and a few food writers). I really wish the stadium would just keep all three on the menu for the rest of the season./p

p/p

p class=captionThe Olde Philadelphia Dog (left) and Citizens Bank Park Summer Dog (right)/p

pYou might be thinking, where#039;s the Cheesesteak and Whiz dog? where#039;s the pork roll? The team of chefs and executives at Aramark (who oversee all the food at the stadium) did a good amount of research and development, sifting through hundreds of ideas and several tastings before whittling it down to three versions that would be practical to serve in large quantities and appeal to the masses./p

pThe emPhiladelphia Inquirer/em recently ran a terrific article outlining the whole signature dog selection process. Some of the other concepts were hot dogs topped with mac and cheese, a hot dog jammed into a mini Italian hoagie, hot dog and scrapple on a pretzel roll, a cheesesteak and whiz dog, and a bacon and Yuengling lager-braised Kraut dog on a potato roll. That last one sounds great to me./p

pDo I think a broccoli-rabe and longhot topped hot dog craze is going to sweep the city? Probably not. I#039;d rather have those things on a roast pork sandwich, or even better, braised tripe and veal. But I give Aramark some points for putting a dog up for the vote that has some roots in Philly history, and for taking the extra step of serving the dogs grilled, a lot more work than just pulling them out of a steam bath./p

pLast night the remaining nine contestants on emAmerican Idol/em stumbled through the catalogue of Elvis Presley, failing for the most part to make any of the King#8217;s tunes their own. Season-eight runner-up Adam Lambert blessedly livened things up as a guest mentor, and he was actually a great tie-in to the week#039;s theme since Elvis also wore mascara offstage and the networks won#8217;t show Lambert doing certain things below the hips. Glambert kept the episode afloat by actually giving some honest feedback, saying this season has great singers but a lot of them need to #8220;wake up #133; let#8217;s put on a show. (And after weeks of the judges wondering what the problem is with Andrew, it was a relief to have someone flat out tell him his singing was boring.)/p

pThe mentoring segments were filmed in Las Vegas, which added absolutely nothing to the episode but did allow Ryan to utter questionable lines like, #8220;Let#8217;s see what happened to Katie in Sin City #133; #8221; And to make up for all the gay jokes in his wheelhouse that he would have liked to have been making last season (there was mid-season speculation, but Lambert didn#8217;t publicly come out until after the season wrapped), Ryan made sure to tell Adam, #8220;My tongue is not nearly as talented as yours #133; you know what I mean, with singing! With singing!#8221; Adam gracefully responded with one of those #8220;please shut up#8221; smiles you make when your mom tells your significant other about your potty-training travails. /p

pThe performances:/p

pCrystal Bowersox continues to impress and show growth. For the first time this season, she actually made a left-field song choice, singing an obscure (in Elvis terms) gospel-blues tune called #8220;Saved.#8221; Naturally, she nailed the vocals and arrangement, and her stage persona was more energetic, sassy, and comfortable than ever before. She#8217;s one of the few contestants this season truly using the show as training for a real career later on. Simon said good things about her, but it was incredibly distracting watching emGlee/em#8217;s Jane Lynch in the background and wondering what she would say if she were at the judges#8217; table./p

pAndrew Garcia#8217;s lounge-lizard re-conception of #8220;Hound Dog#8221; was the kind of thing that should have fallen into the #8220;what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas#8221; category. Even more miserable than his languid singing was his lifeless performance, where he doddered around stage like an old man and dragged the mic with him like it was his IV stand. With two people going home tonight, it#8217;s really time to bid him adieu. Ellen was the only judge who liked it, and explained to Ryan that she liked it because she liked it./p

pAfter weeks of excruciating Sanjaya-esque performances, Tim Urban surprisingly delivered one of the night#8217;s most satisfying songs. Instead of sullying #8220;Can#8217;t Help Falling In Love#8221; with his usual goofy bombast, he gently picked at his acoustic guitar and offered a restrained, understated take on the oft-covered tune that was actually a bit beautiful. Ellen likened him to tequila (because she regrets him the next morning?) but seemed to mean it as a compliment, and Simon indulged in an unforgivable clich#233; by saying Tim #8220;went from zero to hero in two weeks.#8221; Is Simon now writing eighties movie trailers on the side?/p

pLee DeWyze continued his bid to be named Bowersox#039;s runner-up with a bluesy, growling version of #8220;A Little Less Conversation.#8221; He#8217;s finally loosened up onstage to the point where he successfully inhabits each song. Kara still wanted him to smile more and hop around the stage on a pogo stick, but Simon reminded her that #8220;it#8217;s about nailing the song and that was on the money.#8221; Watch it below./p

pDecked out in his emBack to the Future Part II/em-version-of-the-future finest, Aaron Kelly took on #8220;Blue Suede Shoes.#8221; Lambert advised the 17-year-old to put some aggression into his performance, but Aaron just looked scared and hid under a nearby couch. His performance was solid but not memorable #8212; the main problem was the hopelessly outdated backing blues music. Kara applauded him for moving out of his comfort zone, but Simon felt it was too old-fashioned. Jane Lynch sagely nodded along in the background./p

pSiobhan Magnus gave us the soft and screechy sides of her musical persona this week, and the resulting version of #8220;Suspicious Minds#8221; was enjoyable though not exactly relevant, much like her Billy Idol meets Bride of Frankenstein hairstyle. Lambert looked like he loved her performance more than the others, which makes sense: Her voice is lovely, powerful, and idiosyncratic in a way not unlike his own. Randy confusingly likened it to the Supremes, while Kara couldn#8217;t wrap her head around the fact that Siobhan is one girl with two different singing styles. Simon told her she#8217;s lost sight of who she is, but Siobhan wasted no time putting them back in their places. #8220;Even I can#8217;t pinpoint who or what I am, but I#8217;ve always taken pride in that #133; I don#8217;t think it#8217;s necessary to be labeled.#8221; Shine on, you crazy diamond./p

pAfter his near-elimination last week, Michael Lynche sang #8220;In the Ghetto#8221; on Siobhan#8217;s advice. Even though the arrangement was slow and bare-bones, it still came across as cheesy and a bit lame. Mike definitely should have taken Adam#8217;s advice to ignore the judges and embrace his theatrical side #8212; at least then he#8217;d be entertaining instead of forgettable. The judges all give him terse praise, probably because they#8217;re not quite ready to admit he may not have been worth the save./p

pKatie Stevens made an interesting song choice with #8220;Baby What Do You Want Me to Do,#8221; but she came nowhere near pouring her frustration with the judges into her singing, which was her stated aim. Adam correctly said #8220;she needs to sell it more,#8221; but all the non-Simon judges liked her emgrrr/em-face fa#231;ade of anger. Simon told her it was boring and she shouted back at him, #8220;What do you want me to do?#8221; Get voted off the show soon, Katie. Is that so much to ask? /p

pCasey James closed the night with an acceptably old-school blues take on #8220;Lawdy Miss Clawdy.#8221; It was good MOR white blues, but that#8217;s kind of like saying emThe Biggest Loser/em is good for immediately forgettable melodrama. Still, his vocals were fine and, as Ellen pointed out, he did look #8220;comfortable surrounded by a sea of women.#8221; But perhaps she just said that because she likes to watch the muscles in Kara#039;s neck tense up./p

pOdds and sods moments:/p

pSiobhan opined that Elvis is so compelling to her because he came from practically nothing and became one of the most successful performers ever. Never one to pass up an opportunity to make things trite, Ryan declared, #8220;Yep, rags to riches.#8221;/p

pKatie Stevens explained anger to us: #8220;It#8217;s like UGH! Not aaahhhh.#8221;/p

pIn the long-running Fox tradition of attempting to sabotage people by implying they#8217;re terrorists, Seacrest introduced Tim Urban as #8220;Turban.#8221; /p

pSeacrest joked that Brian Dunkleman would return next week for emIdol Gives Back/em. No one in the audience seemed to recall who that was, which means his joke failed, but Seacrest still wins, since his former emIdol/em co-host isn#8217;t remembered well enough to function as a punchline./p

pReminding us of the importance of voting, Ryan shouted, #8220;You don#8217;t want to lose your favorite, because that would suck!#8221; at a frail old lady./p

pTonight Adam Lambert returns to perform, and perhaps we will finally be rid of the oppressive mediocrity that is Andrew Garcia#8217;s singing. And with the save gone, hopefully Siobhan or Casey won#8217;t fall into the bottom two and be forced to shuffle off their emIdol/em coil./p

How to groom a dog

pMusic fans of tomorrow are kids of today, and the way they pay for digital content is through virtual worlds like Farmville and Penguin Town, which turn the acquisition of virtual goods #8212; and digital music is nothing if not a virtual good #8212; into a game./p
pConduit Labs#8217; Music Pets app for Facebook may look cute, but it could have tangible ramifications for how music is discovered and sold in the future./p
pThe goal of Music Pets is to entertain a virtual pet by training it to like the music you like, then using points to send the pet out to find more music to add to your collection. It sounds silly, but this cartoon-ish virtual world includes every element of the real-world music experience: getting recommendations, deciding whether you like songs, collecting music, and going over to your friends#8217; #8220;houses#8221; to play songs from your collection, which, as with just about everything else, requires that you expend points./p
pAs with similar games, you can get everything you want for your pet and your music collection for free, so long as you have the time to add them to your pet#8217;s training regimen by engaging in repetitive, somewhat amusing activities, including a Plinko-style game that has you trying to bounce balls onto all of the letters in a band#8217;s name. Powering up for more points without spending lots of time requires that you pay up in real money, which is something many people simply don#8217;t do for digital music in other contexts./p
pConduit Labs passes on a percentage of revenue to labels, which then pass some of that along to artists and publishers. Is it possible that little furry cartoon characters from Tamagotchi-land will succeed where industry heavyweights have failed: in convincing kids to pay for music?/p
pSo far, the Music Pet Facebook app has drawn over a million users since its launch about a month ago, and the company recently inked a deal with the biggest record label in the world, Universal Music Group, to complement its healthy selection of independent labels (Beggars Group, Domino, Downtown and Modular) in Music Pet as well as its other games, Loudcrowd, which launched at SXSW last year and Super Dance. Rather than selling music at a specific price, the company keeps price vague, because users earn music through a combination of effort and time./p
p#8220;The public perception of the value of a song is very skewed and has little to do with its actual price,#8221; Conduit Labs founder Nabeel Hyatt told Wired.com. #8220;We believe offering fun, social, interactive experiences with music is the best way to monetize.#8221;/p
pIf the idea of grown men and women discovering and collecting music using a cute little avatar sounds absurd, you probably haven#8217;t watched Jesse Schell#8217;s DICE talk. If you don#8217;t have the 20 minutes it takes to watch the whole thing, it can pretty much be summed up in one sentence: In the future, he claims, everything will be a game. It#8217;s either a horrifying Orwellian vision of what#8217;s to come or an indication that we#8217;ll all be more amused in the coming years, depending on how you look at it./p
p/p
pIn the real world, people typically discover music through other people, give it a listen, decide whether to acquire it, and then take it out for a spin every once in a while and maybe play the song for friends./p
pMusic Pets replicates all of that, except that it makes every stage into a game. If Schell is right, this is a template for how the kids of today will purchase music tomorrow./p
pHere#8217;s how it works:br /

pI#8217;m mostly in lurker mode through all your work/posts/commenters through this #8220;torture doc#8221; process. My interest is to comprehend it thoroughly. Don#8217;t really know purposes of everyone participating here and related (Leopold/Kaye etc.), but for me purpose is to solidify and detail conditions in the world/USA etc., as this whole torture saga is (again, for me) a bell weather #8220;canary in the mine#8221; condition: all that it encompasses#8230; the people involved, the ferocious misrepresented advocacy and misrepresentation to the public, the corrosive affect on institutions/gov AND cause/effect response internationally#8230; again for me, at the very least, comprehending severe moral hazards as they exist is a required iknown/i./p
pWith that said, your comment:/p
blockquotepBecause, as I pointed out here, they want to describe this as an ldquo;evolution, rdquo; but theyrsquo;re basing that evolution on his diaries, which they had from the start. So if theyrsquo;re claiming theyrsquo;ve just decided the diaries are the only truthful way of determining who he was, then it means they ignoerd it to sustain claims that he was more than that./p/blockquote
pI would assume that would be obvious to most who have followed your detailing of this. I find, however, that at times details tend to overwhelm the mind and I have to #8220;step back#8221; and take a few breaths. /p
pBut in that statement, the process of slip-shod moment-in-time assessments used as foundation upon which to propel wide ranging action, w/subsequent slip-shod gt;gt; more actions#8230; rinse amp; repeat, on and on, error upon error#8230; mess upon mess. /p
pThis is the #8220;condition of things#8221; out there. Looks to me like a tapestry, much wider and deeper, and much much more corrosive seen in it#8217;s entirety than individual pieces and parts along the way. /p
pSo when you say:/p
blockquotepThis is the Iraq war all over again for them./p/blockquote
p#8230; for me anyway, I am always mindful of just ithat/i. Part of the larger tapestry, exemplary of enough individual events to constitute a iway of doing this/i on such a scale that this iway/i sucks the vitality out of so much else, sickening people who aren#8217;t already corrupted, so on and so forth./p
pAt the core, all the torture details are in most fundamental core, iinstitutionalized dishonesty/i (lies). And this core was expressed through much more than 9/11 gt;gt; Iraq gt;gt; torture and that whole continuum. /p
pThe deceptions were expressed in most every avenue of government under the Bush Years: econ amp; all it#8217;s related tentacles (SEC/FED/TREASURY/FICA-HUD, etc. etc.). It was expressed through the whole Ca. Energy Crisis/Enron thing, and in fact a whole process there similar to what topic of your article here was:/p
p* lie about original cause (Ca. shortage of generation)br /
* Stock FERC w/cronies to #8220;toe the line#8221; (don#8217;t look)br /
* ignored the forced/timed blackouts, ignored cutoff gas supply from Texas, not even look at generator plant shutdowns, etc. etc.br /
* Squeeze and force higher gas (fuel) prices based on fruadulent shortage./p
pAfter it was over#8230; +/- 2 yrs after the fact, after saturating media w/original notions:br /
* CA. had it coming w/#8221;not in our backyard#8221; mentalitybr /
* ENRON (and related#8230; there were many others) embodied morally grounded #8220;free market#8221; principles/p
p#8230; and FERC#8217;s public denial of crimes throughout, they posted on their website confirmation that everything that CA. (and anyone watching w/clear eye) could see and said from the beginning, which I summarized above. They actually posted this. They also mistakenly posted their agreement w/various energy companies involved: that in exchange for admitting and detailing planned outages, there would be no fines/prosecutions/PUBLIC DISCLOSURE. /p
pThat template looks to me near identical to what you#8217;ve described/summarized here. /p
pAs public was being fed #8220;patriotism#8221;, #8220;freedom fries#8221; and #8220;liberation#8221; along the way, I vividly recall having conversations w/people who were looking beyond headlines and deciphering details. Among common statements I (and others#8230; both locally, in blogs etc.) made, was observation that cumulatively#8230; eg. everything Iraq, one mega-tax cut after another concurrent w/mega-offshoring igt;everything, w/simeoultaneous pronouncement of #8220;economy is strong#8221;, then W#8217;s privatize SS initiative#8230; /p
pIt seemed as though, w/these guys utter disdain for most anyone outside their elite circles, that they were deliberately setting out to backrupt the country#8230; financially, morally, culturally. /p
pIt was Blitzkrieg on every front#8230; saturating. Far and wide media saturation, far and wide financial reorganization, far and wide military action#8230; and all of it covered up w/cheap, meaningless jingoism and primate based metaphors./p
pSo now, in what could have been a major cleanup stage#8230; this torture thing process seems just like the financial thing process:br /
* crimes amp; lies well documented, well enough detailed for anyone taking the time to comprehend them to understand.br /
* the public (gov) institutions w/power amp; authority to do something about #8216;em#8230; each and everyone corrupted along the way, gets to a point where there is opportunity for an iaccountability moment/i, as in the DOJ AW #8220;evolution#8221; filing that is topic of this post.br /
* whether financial, energy, or torture#8230; as this opportunity arrives, these iauthorities/i utterly fail to do the job: we get something like what we#8217;ve got in this DOJ #8220;pleading#8221;: #8220;fuzzy math#8221;, meaningless dismissall of self-evident facts/crimes w/massive (and I stress that word) affects#8230; essentially, it seems to me, implicit acknowledgement from feds that all this shit is now institutionalized w/in US government, w/fall out in culture a factor not worthy of consideration./p
pNot good, not good at all. The good ship USA taking on a lot of water these days, and captains are telling the passengers to be calm./p
pVery useful to maintain a clear eye these days./p

p#8230; for me anyway, I am always mindful of just ithat/i.
* Stock FERC w/cronies to #8220;toe the line#8221; (don#8217;t look)br /
The good ship USA taking on a lot of water these days, and captains are telling the passengers to be calm./p
pVery useful to maintain a clear eye these days./p

pItrsquo;s impressive coming from an industry that has had to overcome the boysrsquo; club reputation that has plagued it almost since its inception. If you donrsquo;t know what that reputation is, you probably havenrsquo;t read ldquo;Women in Refrigeratorsrdquo;, the 1999 essay by Simone. In it, she and other comic fans list all of the female characters ldquo;who have been either depowered, raped, or cut up and stuck in the refrigerator, rdquo; Simone wrote at the time, taking her title from the grisly fate of Alexandra DeWitt, girlfriend of the Green Lantern who was icedmdash;both figuratively and literallymdash;to teach the superhero a lesson./p
pldquo; For many decades, comics (and film, and television) did a relatively poor job of representing female characters (and gays, and minorities) at all, rdquo; Simone wrote in an email interview. ldquo; So the pool of established, well-liked characters of those types was small to begin with, and having the majority of them be depowered, raped, and mutilated with metronomic frequency was, I think, very alienating.rdquo;/p
pldquo; The superhero genre is basically adolescent male power fantasies, rdquo; says Karen Berger, executive editor of DC Comicsrsquo; Vertigo imprint. This has unfortunately translated into some troubling storylines for women in superhero titles. A few examples include the Black Cat, whose erratic behavior was explained away by a sexual assault in her past, and Jessica Jones, star of Marvelrsquo;s iAlias/i title who gave up costumed crime fighting in lieu of private investigating after, you guessed it, a sexual assault. And, of course, Alexandra DeWitt, the woman in the refrigerator. G. Willow Wilson, writer of DCrsquo;s iAir/i and iVixen: Return of the Lion/i, says that using violence against women as a quick way of establishing a character is a depressing industry practice. ldquo;I think itrsquo;s a way to get cheap thrills and attract the lowest common denominator. I donrsquo;t think putting yourself in such an adversarial position towards half the planet is a good way to get new readers.rdquo;/p
pWilson, who revived the Justice League character of Vixen for a five-issue mini-series in October 2008, said that writing a female superhero came with its own set of baggage. ldquo;Because shersquo;s been written primarily by men, primarily for men, and so to shape her into a character more women would empathize with, yoursquo;ve gotta wrestle with a lot of her history in previous stories that have been written by men.rdquo;/p

pTwo things.br /
Firstly, if you#039;re meant to be a writer, learn to use question marks. They#039;re kind of important./p

pSecondly, there may not be a ton of female founders and venture capitalists, but so long as the money and skills needed are in the industry, it doesn#039;t matter./p

pI do not believe that women are playing catch up in business, but rather the world is taking a while to catch up to the way women have been doing business for centuries./p

pI have read quite a few of these gender based articles over the last few months. I think the awareness is useful and valuable. /p

pHowever, I do find it interesting that I do not see the same attention paid to races as subgroups, and the discrepancy here is much bigger in my experience. I#039;m not really sure why that is the case, but it is quite evident./p

pAre race issues just so Taboo that journalists skate around it? I#039;m not making a judgment either way, but it#039;s interesting. Maybe it#039;s a function of the size of the female subgroup?/p

pWarren, I am a female founder/CEO and I have noticed the same trend of avoiding this other elephant in the room. I think race is just scarier for people to address, but the racial gaps seem to totally outstrip the gender ones, IMHO. At least in the Hispanic and African American segments. /p

pI have worked with many very capable women over the last 20 years and I have not seen a noticeable difference in talent between women and men in their ability to do startups. One only has to look as far as Judy Estrin, Kim Polese, Mary Lou Jepsen, Mena Trott, Meg Whitman, Oprah, Martha Stewart, and Mary Kay Ash to know that women can most certainly do startups. However from my observations of women in technology over the last 20 years or so, there are some fundamental differences between women and men in the tech sector that contribute to less women doing startups than men. /p

p1. Men don#039;t have a biological clock for procreation. Between the ages of 22 and 52 they can commit any 4 year block for a startup that they want if they want to do a startup. Women who want to procreate understand that the probability of procreating is better if they leave the ages between 22 and 37 open for procreating. This also means that once they have committed to a startup, they have committed to not procreating, and vice versa. This factor reduces the number of women interested in doing a startup. I#039;m not saying that this influences all women or even a majority. But it is certainly a significant enough minority to diminish the numbers of women in startups. /p

p2. Many women lose interest or have diminished interest in their careers after procreation because they find their family responsibilities more fulfilling. I#039;m not saying all, or even a majority. But it is certainly a significant enough minority to diminish the numbers of women in startups. /p

p3. Women are more likely to want a life and have a life outside their careers and want/have it more than men. Having a life outside work not a real option in enough startups, and personally, I know more women who want and have a life than men who want the same./p

pInterestingly, these factors also affect many men and the results are similar, but just not as noticeable as with women. /p

pDepending on whether or not you#039;re heading to movie theaters this weekend, you might learn a little something or two about How To Train Your Dragon. In all likelihood, you#039;re not going to encounter too many fire-breathing winged beasts in your life mdash; I would hope not, anyway mdash;nbsp;but in case you do, DreamWorks#039; latest 3-D animated feature should teach you a couple of tricks on how to tame such a mythical creature./p
pBut if you have plans that prevent you from heading to the local cinema in the near future, never fear mdash; there are plenty of other films that have already laid out a few lessons on how to train your pet dragon, or at least how to avoid getting killed by one!/p
pAfter the jump, check out some of the lessons we#039;ve learned from other cinematic dragons. span id=more-32635/span/p
pstrongCover Up Your Underbelly:/strong Although the vast majority of dragons are capable of massive amounts of destruction, that#039;s not to say they#039;re without their weaknesses. Take Smaug in the forthcoming The Hobbit, for example mdash; powerful though he may be, the lack of gold plating on one portion of his belly proved to be his undoing. When training your dragon, it#039;s important to identify any weakness that could be exploited by a potential opponent./p
pstrongDon#039;t Assume Too Much:/strong It#039;s easy to look at a dragon and find yourself terrified at the creature#039;s ferocious appearance, but don#039;t be so quick to judge a book by its cover mdash; or, in this case, a dragon by its scales. Draco, the Sean Connery-voiced dragon at the center of Dragonheart, is certainly sarcastic and has a bit of a mean streak, but if treated with respect and appreciation, he can become an invaluable ally. /p
pstrongDon#039;t Stare A Gift Dragon In The Mouth:/strong As a trainer, it#039;s important to know your limitations against a dragon mdash; for instance, leaping at a dragon while clutching a battle axe in your hand is most likely going to lead to you being swallowed whole, like Matthew McConaughey#039;s character in Reign of Fire. It#039;s best to deal with these creatures diplomatically, since violence isn#039;t going to get you anywhere aside from a dragon#039;s digestive tract. /p
pstrongEstablish A Friendship:/strong Beyond diplomacy, appreciation and respect, there#039;s a lot to be said for loving your dragon. In Pete#039;s Dragon, Pete and Elliott the Dragon have an excellent relationship due to the young orphan#039;s affinity for the cartoon creature. By solidifying a loving relationship between yourself and your dragon, you#039;ll find yourself not only with a partner in crime, but with a true friend./p
pstrongGet Lucky:/strong In life, education and ability aren#039;t always enough mdash; often, you need some luck on your side in order to achieve your dreams. So if you#039;re ever at a point where you can actually select your very own dragon, you would be wise to find a luckdragon like Falkor from The Neverending Story. While he#039;s not as strong and menacing as some other fictional dragons, he#039;s impossibly lucky, and that#039;s an invaluable skill to have on your side./p
pemWhat other lessons have you learned from movie dragons? Tell us in the comments on on Twitter!/em/p

pYou only have to look in that box titled AMERICAblog Reader Pets in the upper right hand corner of this site to see how much we all love their pets. We#039;ve received hundreds and hundreds of pet photos — and they keep coming. Last week, John — finally — joined the rank of pet owners. So, all the animal lovers should read this article from today#039;s New York Times about dogs who have come to the aid of vets dealing with PTSD:blockquoteThe dogs to whom they credit their improved health are not just pets. Rather, they are psychiatric service dogs specially trained to help traumatized veterans leave the battlefield behind as they reintegrate into society.br /br /Because of stories like these, the federal government, not usually at the forefront of alternative medical treatments, is spending several million dollars to study whether scientific research supports anecdotal reports that the dogs might speed recovery from the psychological wounds of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.br /br /In dozens of interviews, veterans and their therapists reported drastic reductions in P.T.S.D. symptoms and in reliance on medication after receiving a service dog. /blockquoteThe article is really worth a read. And, hat tip to Senator Al Franken: blockquoteUnder a bill written by Senator Al Franken, Democrat of Minnesota, veterans with P.T.S.D. will get service dogs as part of a pilot program run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Training a psychiatric service dog and pairing it with a client costs more than $20,000. The government already helps provide dogs to soldiers who lost their sight or were severely wounded in combat, but had never considered placing dogs for emotional damage. /blockquote/p

How to groom a dog

pa href=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3133/2715625933_92f1eaaa31.jpgimg alt=Pet my tummy please by Jan amp;amp; Peggy src=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3133/2715625933_92f1eaaa31.jpg //a/p

pI#039;ve been involved driving sled dogs since the eighties and bought and built many gadgets over the years that I#039;ve found useful despite not being a big gadget guy./p

pA life long nordic skiier, I learned about skijoring from a Swedish musher and thought it sounded like a great idea. The only thing was that in the late eighties there were no suppliers of gear. My first skijor belt was a chain wrapped around my waist but soon found and adapted a climbing harness. As the climbing harness had leg loops it was superior to early models later available in the US until they started adapting this idea. Nowadays, there are many excellent suppliers of skijor gear./p

pOne of the coolest things I#039;ve made was working with a retired aircraft engineer who had a grant from a dog food maker to study dog output. At the time, trees made GPS units rather unreliable so we used a bicycle wheel with a speedometer to measure speed / distance. But for measuring how much the dogs pulled, we built a system using a tensometer jury rigged to a Sinclair computer housed in a rubbermaid box to collect data. The research discovered that an efficient team actually put very little tug on the line to keep forward momentum. Less efficient dogs pull more with less consistency which results in more injuries as dogs pull best by relying on the harness to catch them as they throw themselves forward rather than landing only on their paws./p

pA modified four wheeler ATV has been a great gadget. Got it from the kid down the road for a great price as I had him remove the motor as part of the sale conditions. It#039;s a nice way to get the dogs out when there#039;s no snow. And without the motor there#039;s no hassle for using the local multi-use trail that bans motors./p

pAn avid cyclist, I also pioneered a sport called bike-joring which seems to now be an accepted term. Springer and others have been selling for sometime a way to connect your dog to the side of your bike, but it doesn#039;t allow them to really work. /p

pSo I built a way to attach the dogs to the handlebars. It sounds counter intuitive, but it is the most stable spot to attach them. It#039;s the same spot 6-day riders hold their bars when doing handslings on the track. And if you attach to the headtube, the line too easily gets tangled on the front wheel or fender and there is less control/stability./p

pA loop of bungie and rope over the bars, one on each side of the stem, gives great control and flexibility as it#039;s easy to pull the loops off the stem if you need to untangle them or get better control off bike./p

pThen there#039;s little things like better dishes, food scoopers and poop scoopers that make daily chores easier. Mine are home made for the most part, but I use hog pans as dishes. /p

pI#039;ve always wanted a poop scooping robot and have thought of modifying one of those solar power mowers… but they are expensive and the dogs would probably eat it./p

pAuto axles are a great way to put a stake in the ground that will make it easy to chain up a dog. Much better than those little twisty stakes they sell in pet shops that never work reliably./p

pGood dog houses are also helpful. I use a 50 gallon plastic barrels supported on an A-Frame of pallets. This provides shade underneath the house and puts the door high enough that males don#039;t pee in it. Over the years, been replacing the plastic with wood houses which look a bit nicer and give the dogs a flat spot on the roof to hang out. They like that. Never give a dog a peaked roof, unless it#039;s a 2-D dog like Snoopy who can perch on that./p

pAnd maybe the coolest gadget I#039;ve seen and always wanted, was a truck load of old communication cable spools to give the dog yard a hacker/phreaker look by converting them into dog houses. Someday. /p

pDog mushing is fun in part due to the many innovations that come out over the years. Mushers tend to be quite resourceful hackers who combine high tech with an ancient art whose motto is, you can fix anything with an axe that reflex a legacy of self reliance in the wilderness. And despite the cool things I can brag about, am humbled by the true master dog drivers who could go out with one tool, an axe, and build an outstandingly engineered perfectly balanced sled out of a birch tree in short order that would outperform one made in a fully supplied shop of powertools and laser rulers and allignment devices./p

h1Add Some Hooch to Your Pooch/h1

pAccording to folklore and Woody Woodpecker, St. Bernards once carried barrels of brandy around their necks to revive stranded mountaineers. Now such barrels can go around your dog#039;s neck to revive you for $50. [Kegworks via TheGreenHead via OhGizmo!]/p
